The story

He came to the coast to disappear. The tide had other plans.

Richard arrives in Cambria carrying the wreckage of his marriage and the secret of Jason, the younger man he cannot forget. Old Moonstone Cottage should be a place to hide. Instead, its clocks stop at 11:11, wet footprints cross empty rooms, and journals left by vanished guests whisper of a force beneath the cliffs.

As a red-haired woman begins appearing at the waterline and Jason drives north through a gathering storm, Richard is drawn toward the Hollow Tide - a place where grief takes form, memory becomes a prison, and love may be the only thing strong enough to bring someone home.

The Hollow Tide

“The Hollow keeps what people
try hardest not to lose.”

Beneath the cliffs lies a place made from longing - where rooms remember, drowned voices call from the dark, and time follows the pull of the sea.

About the author

Phillip Large

An Emmy Award-winning filmmaker turns his eye from documented history to the haunted edge of the California coast.

For more than four decades, Phillip Large has brought untold stories to the screen as a writer, director and producer. His documentaries have appeared on PBS and been broadcast nationally and internationally, tracing lives shaped by war, aviation, courage and survival.

Pieces of Glass, his first novel, grew from years spent walking the shoreline near Cambria. The cliffs, storms and sea caves were real. What waited beneath them was not.

Writing this book was about escaping tradition - it was about revealing the truths that reality often tries to keep hidden.
